Nevill Francis Mott was born in Leeds on September 30, 1905, to Charles Francis Mott and Lilian Mary Reynolds.

Although his parents had not pursued an academic career, both of them had received a robust education in mathematics and the physical sciences. In the early years of the 20th century, they had indeed met each other when working at the eminent Cavendish Laboratory under the directorship of J.

J. Thomson, who shortly after would win the 1906 Nobel Prize in Physics.
